A Boston conference last week highlighted American Jews' internal divisions over Israel since October 7 and the Gaza war, but also their intensified commitment, and even hope. 'People are hungry – desperate, even – for a place to be Jewish' outside of Zionism, according to one historian and moderator

A recent survey by the Jewish Federations of North America found that only one third of American Jews identify as Zionist. This, of course, doesn't mean that most American Jews want to dismantle the State of Israel. Nine out of ten Jews support Israel's right to exist as a "Jewish and democratic state," and 70 percent said they felt emotionally attached to Israel.
