Two shootings at a school and a home left at least nine people dead and dozens others wounded in northeastern British Columbia on Tuesday, Feb. 10, Canadian authorities said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said it received a report of an active shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at about 1:20 p.m. local time. Officers responded to the scene and found dozens of victims and the suspected shooter, who was found dead with what appeared to be a self‑inflicted injury.
Six victims were dead inside the high school, and a seventh person died on the way to the hospital, authorities said in a news release. Two others were airlifted to the hospital with serious or life‑threatening injuries, according to police.
Another 25 people were being assessed for injuries at a local medical center for non‑life‑threatening injuries, police added. Officers helped all remaining students and staff evacuate from the school.
As part of the investigation, police said that two people were found dead at a home and that it's believed to be linked to the school shooting. Officers were searching additional homes and properties to "determine whether anyone else may be injured or otherwise linked to today’s events," according to police.
