The Union government should present an annual report on the ‘State of Social Justice’ on the lines of the Economic Survey that is presented ahead of the Union Budget every year, Congress’s Rajya Sabha MP Mukul Wasnik said, arguing that India needs a structured, data-backed assessment of how far it has progressed or fallen short in ensuring equality and inclusivity.

Mr. Wasnik was addressing Rajya Sabha during the Zero Hour, which allows Parliamentarians to raise issues of national importance. He said that there is a need for systematic evaluation of existing legal and policy frameworks to ensure they meet constitutional mandates.

Mr. Wasnik stressed the need for a sharper examination of laws and schemes designed to safeguard the dignity and lives of disadvantaged communities. He highlighted the continuing inhuman practice of manual scavenging, questioning how long the nation would remain a “spectator” to deaths in manholes.

The lawmaker also sought closer scrutiny of budgetary allocations and the real-world impact of affirmative action programmes meant to empower vulnerable groups. Persistent disparities in education, employment, median income and poverty levels must be assessed, he said.
