Before adjourning proceedings for the day, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the House, stating he had advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come to the House on Wednesday (February 4, 2026) due to “definite information” that Opposition members were prepared to protest in an “unprecedented manner”.
The House passed the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address on Thursday (February 5, 2026) without the customary reply from the Prime Minister.
“With sadness I have to inform that some members displayed such behaviour in the House on Wednesday [February 4] that had never been witnessed in its history,” Mr. Birla said.
Motion of Thanks passed without PM Modi’s response in Lok Sabha
The Prime Minister had been scheduled to reply to the discussion on the motion thanking President Droupadi Murmu for her address to the joint sitting of Parliament at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday (February 4, 2026). However, the House had to be adjourned as women MPs from Opposition parties walked across the aisle and held up banners in front of the Mr. Modi’s front row seat.
