Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that it will not enforce regulations against "false or misleading" material on food labeling.
The new plan would give manufacturers the ability to label their products free of artificial food dyes, even if they aren't.
The FDA's rules say that any color additives are labeled as "artificial color" even if they're derived from natural sources. The regulations have stopped food companies from claiming that their products have no artificial dyes, even if they come from things such as beets, The Hill reported.
FDA Commissioner Marty Makary and Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods Kyle A. Diamantas published a letter Thursday announcing the plan.
