A law enforcement helicopter responding to an active shooting incident crashed in Arizona the evening of Feb. 4, killing the pilot and trooper on board, authorities said.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger Helicopter was providing "tactical air support" to police in the Flagstaff area when it crashed, the department said in a statement. The identities of the pilot and the trooper/paramedic who were killed will not be released at this time, the public safety department said.
The Flagstaff Police Department and other agencies were engaged in a shooting with a suspect in the area at the time, authorities said. The suspect suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds and was taken into custody. Nobody else was injured, they said.
Local resident Amanda Brewer told CBS affiliate KPHO-TV she heard the helicopter and gunshots near her home.
"You could hear the blades going,” she told the outlet. “Then there was a very large crash; it shook the house. It was startling."
