The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the authorities to take appropriate action and file a report to a public interest litigation petition that complained about garbage being dumped in front of Palani Andavar Arts and Culture college in Palani in Dindigul district.
A Division Bench of Justices G. Jayachandran and K.K. Ramakrishnan issued the direction while hearing the petition filed by V. Surya of Dindigul district.
The petitioner complained that garbage was being dumped right in front of the college. The residents and passersby were tossing plastic bags containing waste. A foul smell was emanating from the place due to the improper disposal of garbage, he said.
The road was used by the devotees coming to the Palani hill temple. This was environmental pollution and posed a serious threat to the people. Even though there was a garbage bin in the place, people were throwing waste around it, he said.
He said he had made a representation to the authorities concerned to remove the garbage bin from the place to prevent dumping of garbage in front of the college. However, no action had been taken by the authorities so far, he complained. The petitioner also sought a direction to the authorities to install a notice board in the place to prevent dumping of garbage in front of the college.
