A court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced nine Bangladeshi nationals to two years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹10,000, since they were unable to produce valid travel documents.The Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Bhubaneswar, convicted nine people who belong to Maymeenisingh, Bagerhat, Prispur and Dhanka districts in Bangladesh under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946.According to the police, the suspects were apprehended at the Bhubaneswar Railway Station on March 8, 2025. During interrogation, they provided prevaricatory statements and attempted to flee from the raiding team.“The arrested Bangladeshi nationals failed to produce a passport, visa or any other valid travel document. They also confessed that they came to India in a clandestine manner without valid documents through a jungle route in Assam at night,” a senior police officer said.A chargesheet was submitted in May last year against the accused under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946. The prosecution examined six witnesses and exhibited 14 documents. Most of the accused were in their forties. Published - February 03, 2026 08:50 pm IST
