The State has been allotted ₹7,611 crore in the railway budget presented by the Union Finance Minister N. Sitharaman on Sunday. At a virtual meeting the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed that this allotment was nine times higher compared to the amount of Rs. 879 crore allotted from 2009-14. The Railway Ministry had allotted ₹6,626 crore in the last financial year of 2025-26.

In a press note shared by the Southern Railway, total work costing ₹35,701 crore was under progress, comprising track construction, station redevelopment, and safety enhancements. Also, the Southern Railway has achieved 97% track electrification, with 2,386 kilometres of rail lines electrified and more than 1,350 kms of new tracks commissioned. Also 769 flyovers and underpasses have been constructed since 2014.

The Railway Board had sanctioned redevelopment of 77 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) at an outlay of ₹3,147 crore, with 18 railway stations covering St. Thomas Mount, Thiruvannamalai, Chidambaram, Mannargudi, and Srirangam completed.

The State has been allotted nine pairs of Vande Bharat express trains along with nine pairs of Amrit Bharat express trains.
