Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Carlos Alcaraz's pressure and shot selection made Novak Djokovic appear as if he donned lead loafers in wet cement en route to his first Australian Open title Sunday in Melbourne.
"I think nobody knows how hard "I've been working to get this trophy," Alcaraz said in the ESPN broadcast. "It was a bit of a roller coaster emotionally. ... We just did the right work. My team was pushing me every day to do the right things.
"I'm just really grateful for everyone I have in my corner."
With the four-set victory, the 22-year-old Spaniard became the youngest man in tennis' Open Era (since 1968) to clinch a career Grand Slam. He also earned a $4.15 million prize, while denying his Serbian foe of a record 25th Grand Slam.
"I think the best word to describe it is historic, legendary," Djokovic said of Alcaraz.
