While filming Mutiny on the Bounty in 1961, Marlon Brando fell in love with Tahiti and the islands of French Polynesia. Five years later, the Oscar-winning actor purchased the Tetiaroa atoll—once home to Tahitian royalty—for $200,000 (or about $2 million today). Brando lived there for some 30 years until his death in 2004, and a decade later his family trust—along with the hospitality company Pacific Beachcomber—turned it into a luxurious eco-friendly resort.
