Report: Trump Administration Met With Groups Pushing Alberta To Break With CanadaMembers of President Donald Trump's administration have met three times over the past year with a group leading a push for Alberta to secede from Canada, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The meetings between the State Department and the Alberta Prosperity Project, a far-right group which wants the conservative and oil-rich province to break away from Canada, took place in Washington. But group leaders and the State Department differ on whether the Trump administration supports the group's efforts."The U.S. is extremely enthusiastic about a free and independent Alberta," Jeff Rath, the legal counsel for the Alberta Prosperity Project, told the paper. In statements, however, both the State Department and the White House said officials regularly meet with "civil society groups." "No such support, or any other commitments, was conveyed," the State Department said.Tensions between the U.S. and Canada are high because of Trump's tariffs on the country. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a speech last week where he said Canada needed to prepare for a world where the U.S. was no longer a reliable partner on the global stage.See All UpdatesClose
