President Donald Trump on Thursday appeared to pour cold water on his administration’s plan to decrease the amount of federal agents in Minneapolis. At a Kennedy Center screening of “Melania,” Trump was asked by a reporter, “Will you be pulling back immigration enforcement agents out of Minnesota?”“We keep our country safe. We’ll do whatever we can to keep our country safe,” the president replied.“So, you’re not pulling back?” the journalist pressed.“No, no, not at all,” Trump answered.Border czar Tom Homan, who was assigned to oversee the immigration agents in Minneapolis after missteps by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino, had said he was looking for “commonsense cooperation that allows us to draw down on the number of people we have here. ... Yes, I said it — draw down the number of people here because we have the efficiency and safety of the jails and the prisons.”Homan said the retreat did not signify that the administration is surrendering “our mission,” but rather doing so “smarter.”A White House official on Friday told HuffPost that Trump and Homan were in sync on not scaling back operations.Homan’s presence in the tense city is seen as an attempt by the administration to de-escalate tensions. DHS officers killed two protesters this month under dubious circumstances, while Trump, Noem, and Bovino contributed to the demonization of the two victims. Videos of the incidents, however, refuted their early claims that Renee Good and Alex Pretti instigated their shooting deaths.Close
