Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (January 28, 2026) broached the topic of a power sharing arrangement in Tamil Nadu with DMK parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi during their meeting in New Delhi, sources from both parties confirmed.
“The talks went well but no agreement on seat-sharing for the Assembly elections was reached. The DMK explained its position citing the problems that could arise in a power-sharing arrangement,” a source told The Hindu.
Sources said the two leaders held “discussions on issues that need to be resolved”. However, the number of seats for the Congress did not figure in the meeting. The DMK is also not inclined to substantially increase the number of seats for the Congress, though it has already committed to a Rajya Sabha seat. The Congress was allotted 25 seats in the last Assembly elections. The DMK is ready to allot two more seats.
Though Mr. Rahul Gandhi did not raise the issue of increase in seats, he did ask about the possibility of power-sharing. *The Congress leader also wanted to know why the DMK had not formed a committee to discuss the seat-sharing with the Congress and other alliance partners. He requested this be constituted expeditiously.*
