The Supreme Court on Wednesday (January 28, 2026) extended the tenure of its all-women committee of three former High Court judges headed by former High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal, constituted in August 2023 to monitor the rehabilitation work in violence-torn Manipur, by another six months.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the committee would continue to function till July 31, 2026. The panel has so far filed over 40 reports in the Supreme Court, acting as the court’s eyes and ears in providing the ‘healing touch’ in the northeastern State.
The court had formed the broad-based committee, which had included Justice Shalini Phansalkar Joshi, a retired Bombay High Court judge, and Justice Asha Menon, a former Delhi High Court judge.

“This will be a broad-based committee which will be constituted to supervise, intervene and monitor relief and rehabilitation, restoration of homesteads, religious places of worship, better relief work, etc,” the apex court had observed.
