Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and his Haryana counterpart Nayab Singh Saini met in Chandigarh on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) to discuss the long-pending Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue.
The meeting between the Chief Ministers, which began at a hotel in Chandigarh and is attended by senior officers of both the governments, is still under way.
‘Completion of SYL Canal essential to resolve water dispute between Punjab and Haryana’
The SYL canal issue has been a bone of contention between the two States for the past several years. Last May, the Supreme Court directed the two States to cooperate with the Centre for an amicable solution to the decades-old dispute. In a recent hearing, the top court had fixed the next date of hearing in the matter in April.
The SYL canal was conceptualised for the effective sharing of water from Ravi and Beas rivers between the two States. The project envisages a 214-km canal, of which a 122 km stretch was to be constructed in Punjab and the remaining 92 km in Haryana.
