Two cases of the deadly Nipah virus have been reported in India, according to multiple reports.

Authorities in India have confirmed the cases, which involve two nurses at a private hospital near Kolkata, West Bengal, The Telegraph and The Independent reported. The virus can cause mild to severe infections, and the case fatality rate of the virus is estimated at 40% to 75%, according to the World Health Organization.

One of the nurses is in "critical condition," Narayan Swaroop Nigam, principal secretary of the health and family welfare department in West Bengal, told The Telegraph.

In a post to X, India's Ministry of Health shared precautions to prevent Nipah virus infection.

"Stay alert, stay informed and follow advisories issued by local health authorities," the post read.
