T
ensions in the United States have continued to rise. The death of a nurse, Alex Pretti, who was killed by a Border Patrol agent on January 24, while trying to protect people protesting against anti-immigration operations in Minneapolis, has come to symbolize this escalation. The incident came only two weeks after the death of Renee Good, another protester in the same city who was killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent.
In both cases, federal authorities have openly lied by attempting to portray the deadly shootings as entirely legitimate, despite several eyewitness videos that make such claims difficult to support. In both cases, instead of expressing any compassion toward the victims, some of the country's highest officials have denigrated them by labeling them "domestic terrorists."
Finally, federal authorities have also prevented local police, in both cases, from investigating the deaths. In doing so, they have guaranteed impunity for the implicated agents, which the White House has promised for those tasked with capturing and deporting people residing in the US without legal status.
