Days after the Delhi High Court declared shelters as a fundamental right in an order, NDMC vice-chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal said on Saturday that three New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) community halls in Kidwai Nagar, Laxmi Bai Nagar, and Mandir Marg have been made available for temporary night shelters to protect the homeless and patients seeking treatment at city hospitals, and their relatives, from severe cold.
A day earlier, some night shelters in the city had reported a space crunch following a dip in daytime temperatures due to rain.
The NDMC has nine community halls, of which only those without prior bookings have been selected for the night shelter service, Mr. Chahal said.
“Locations have been selected after carefully considering booking availability so that the public at large does not face any inconvenience, even as facilities are extended to the needy,” he added.
The civic body stated in a release that it will provide water and electricity, along with space, while DUSIB will provide beds and other essential provisions.
