Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The College Football Playoff will keep its 12-team format in 2026, the management committee announced Friday.

College Football Playoff finalists participated in a four-team tournament from 2014 through 2023. The 12-team playoff was introduced in 2024 and continued in 2025, with changes to its seeding structure.

Officials said Friday that the decision to continue with the 12-team format "provides additional time for evaluation and discussion on the current format and potential changes in the future."

Support for an expanded field, including 16- and 24-team models, has grown in recent years.

"After ongoing discussion about the 12-team playoff format, the decision was made to continue with the current structure," College Football Playoff executive director Rich Clark said.
