The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Friday (January 23, 2026) “unanimously” adopted a resolution urging the Union government to ensure that the right to work of people in rural areas is established as per the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005. The resolution further said that continuous funding for the same must be secured in accordance with the employment needs of the poor and based on State performance in the MGNREG Scheme.

The resolution, moved by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin the House, said it must be guaranteed that the allocation for the scheme was no less than those made in the previous years under the MGNREGS, so that the livelihood of women, persons with disabilities, and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes was continuously protected and social security was assured.

The proposed new procedure of the Union government in providing allocation on a discretionary basis, based on the intended assessment, should be abandoned and the practice of providing allocation according to the demand for employment, which was already being followed under the MGNREGS, should continue, the resolution stated. Respecting the federal principles, the State governments should be allowed to formulate the procedure for allocating the funds as per the demand for employment.
