Australia Police said they were hunting for a gunman on the run after three people were killed in a shooting in New South Wales on Thursday (January 22, 2026). Police said an operation was currently under way in the town of Lake Cargelligo, about 611 kilometres (379 miles) west of Sydney, and urged residents to stay indoors.

New South Wales police said they found a man and woman dead in a vehicle after responding to reports of shots being fired in the town in the late afternoon. A second shooting soon afterwards killed a woman and wounded a man who was reported to be in a “critical condition” in hospital.

Australia on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) passed new laws to enable a national gun buyback and tighten background checks for firearm licences in response to the ⁠shooting.
