They include a 5-year-old, a 10-year-old and a 17-year-old, who were taken into custody alongside a parent. Agents also detained a 17-year-old, who was driving to school on his own when they took him from his car.“Why detain a 5-year-old? You can't tell me that this child is going to be classified as a violent criminal,” District Superintendent Zena Stenvik said at a press conference on Wednesday.In a statement about the detention of the 5-year-old, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said that ICE didn't "target" a child. “Parents are asked if they want to be removed with their children, or ICE will place the children with a safe person the parent designates," McLaughlin said in a statement.
