Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Wednesday (January 21, 2026) observed that the manner of the conduct of the revision of electoral rolls must conform to the principles of natural justice, that is, it should be just and fair.
The Supreme Court resumed hearing petitions from Trinamool Congress leaders alleging discrepancies in the conduct of the Special Intensive Revisions (SIR) in West Bengal, which led to exclusions from the electoral roll.

Ahead of the hearing, the Election Commission on Wednesday stated in an affidavit to the Supreme Court that many instances of “logical discrepancies” found in the electoral roll of West Bengal defied science. Two electors were found with more than 200 children, seven with over 100 children, 10 with over 50 children, and another 10 with more than 40.
