The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance swept the municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra on Friday (January 16, 2026) with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis claiming victory in 25 of the 29 bodies. He termed the outcome a “massive mandate” even though the State Election Commission declared results for only 11 corporations, with counting going on till late night.

In Mumbai, according to the latest figures, the BJP became the single largest party with 89 seats. Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) got 65 seats, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena bagged 29, and Congress won 24.

The AIMIM sprang a surprise by claiming victory in 98 seats across Maharashtra, with eight in Mumbai, and upset political equations.

For the first time, Thackerays lost control of India’s richest civic body BMC after ruling it for over 25 years.
