Happy Birthday, Wikipedia!The internet’s encyclopedia turns 25 today, a momentous birthday for an experiment that, at the outset, seemed like an impossibly ambitious project.Since its launch by founder Jimmy Wales on Jan. 15, 2001, the volunteer-based knowledge repository has become one of the most-visited websites in the world, with more than 65 million articles across 300 languages, being updated by nearly 250,000 volunteer editors.According to Wikipedia, the site gets nearly 15 billion views per month, the equivalent of two views a month for every human on the planet.Anil Dash, a blogging pioneer and self-described “internet’s uncle,” commemorated the occasion in a blog post on Thursday with both a look back and a concerning look forward.“Perhaps the greatest compliment to Wikipedia at 25 years old is the fact that, if the fascists can’t buy it, then they’re going to try to kill it,” he wrote.Read more:See All UpdatesClose
