Democratic Gov. Tim Walz called on Minnesotans to use their phones to record federal officers conducting immigration enforcement actions in the state following the fatal shooting by an ICE agent of Renee Nicole Macklin Good.
"Help us establish a record of exactly what’s happening in our communities," said Walz in an appeal to his citizens. "Help us create a database not just to establish a record for posterity but for future prosecutions."
Walz’s rare address to the state comes amid what the Department of Homeland Security calls its "largest immigration operation ever." Immigration authorities say the controversial crackdown is needed to root out fraud in social welfare programs officials say is linked to Somali immigrants.
Homeland Security’s militarized deployment became a lightning rod in the nation after U.S. Customs and Immigration agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot Good, 37, amid an enforcement action on Jan. 7.
Top Trump administration officials say the mother of three was tailing agents and engaged in an act of "domestic terrorism" when she drove her SUV forward near Ross.
