Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Manchester United reached an agreement to appoint Michael Carrick as interim coach.
Sources told ESPN, The Athletic and Sky Sports about the agreement Tuesday. Carrick, who served as manager at Middlesbrough from 2022 to June 2025, worked as caretaker manager for the Red Devils for three games in 2021.
The Red Devils fired former manager Ruben Amorim on Jan. 5. Darren Fletcher served as interim coach for the last two games, a Premier League draw with Burnley and a 2-1 loss to Brighton in the FA Cup.
Carrick, 44, played at Manchester United from 2006 to 2018. The former midfielder played for Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Swindon Town and Birmingham City and made 34 appearances for England's national team.
Carrick and Middlesbrough went 18-18-10 and finished 10th in the 2024-25 Championship standings. They finished eighth in 2023 after a 20-17-9 league campaign.
