The new Kozhikode Corporation council will elect its standing committee chairpersons on Tuesday (January 13, 2026), a week after the members of the standing committees were elected.
In the election for standing committee members held on January 6 and 7, the LDF secured a majority in six of the eight committees. Meanwhile, the UDF, despite holding an advantageous position in the council this time, managed a majority in only one committee and has the same strength as the BJP in another.
The election to the eight standing committees was a bit tricky this time, with the opposition (UDF–28, BJP–13) being stronger than the ruling LDF, which holds 35 seats. An election became necessary to fill the committees for the first time in decades, as the parties could not reach a sharing agreement as usual. Meanwhile, the LDF, lacking a majority, could not impose its decisions either.
However, the LDF had no difficulty clinching the Finance, Works, and Education standing committees, whose members were selected without an election as there were only the required number of nominations. There were also no elections for the Welfare Committee, in which the UDF has a majority, and the Tax and Appeals Committee, which has equal representation from the UDF and BJP (four members each) along with one member from the LDF. The LDF also holds a majority in the Development, Health, and Town Planning standing committees.
