President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, backtracked his split from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s stance on the deadly shooting of a U.S. mother by immigration authorities in Minnesota Wednesday, now deflecting the blame.“The incident in Minneapolis today is yet another tragic example of the results of the hateful rhetoric and violent attacks against the men and women of ICE and BP,” Homan wrote on X. “These brave men and women are forced to conduct law enforcement operations in heightened threat environments every day. Like all Americans, our officers have a right to self defense.”The incident in Minneapolis today is yet another tragic example of the results of the hateful rhetoric and violent attacks against the men and women of ICE and BP. Homan (@RealTomHoman) January 7, 2026Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, was fatally shot by federal authorities on Wednesday morning.Bystander footage of the incident showed Good’s SUV being surrounded by immigration authorities and reversing, turning the wheels of her car to leave before pulling forward when an officer fired a shot through her windshield, then continuing to fire their gun several more times through her open driver’s side window. Despite the video’s narrative, those on the right have come out to bash Good. In a post on Truth Social, the president claimed the victim “was very disorderly,” a stance he doubled down on, later saying “she behaved horribly.” Vice President JD Vance called the deceased mother “a deranged leftist who tried to run [the officer] over.”DHS said the officer “fired defensive shots,” labeling Good a “violent rioter.” On Wednesday, Noem said the shooting was in response to “an act of domestic terrorism,” echoing claims Good “proceeded to weaponize her vehicle and she attempted to run the officer over.”Homan initially broke from Noem’s immediate defense during an interview with CBS Evening News host Tony Dokoupil Wednesday, saying “It’d be unprofessional to comment on what I think happened in that situation. Let the investigation play out and hold people accountable based on the investigation.”“What good is it to do right now to pre-judge the facts of what happened without giving law enforcement professionals, whether it’s the FBI or the local police there, give them time to look at all the videos, talk to all of the witnesses, talk to the officers, and make an educated decision on what occurred today?” Homan continued. He walked back on his stance not too long after the interview aired, and in a follow-up post said he did not have “the opportunity to see all the footage and learn the details of the incident” at the time. This interview was taped earlier today before I had the opportunity to see all the footage and learn the details of the incident. I do not comment before I have the facts. Like all Americans, our officers have a right to self defense. Full stop,” Homan said. The shooting incident has stirred up more scrutiny over ICE operations. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey demanded agents “get the fuck out of Minneapolis” and called DHS’s stance of the shooting as self-defense “bullshit.”“This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying,” Frey said.Close
