After an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot and killed a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman on Wednesday, Homeland Security officials were quick to describe the incident as an act of self-defense. “One of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them — an act of domestic terrorism,” DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin claimed in a statement on X. “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots.” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem echoed this sentiment in remarks she gave about the shooting, and alleged the driver “attempted to run a law enforcement officer over.” President Donald Trump similarly alleged that the driver of the vehicle “viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense.”Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, meanwhile, called that narrative “bullshit,” citing a video of the shooting. The victim in the shooting has been identified as Renee Nicole Good, a Twin Cities resident and mother who lived with her partner in the same neighborhood where she was killed. Good was acting as a legal observer of federal actions and was not the target of an ICE arrest, according to CBS News, which cited city leaders. One video taken at street level opens with Good’s SUV parked perpendicular to the road. Two agents exit from a pickup truck. “Get out of the fucking car,” one agent says to Good, who has her driver’s side window rolled down. A second agent approaches Good and pulls on the handle of the driver’s side door with his right hand and sticks his left arm through the window and into the vehicle. After the agent tries to open the door, Good reverses and turns the front wheels to the right away from the two visible agents. A third agent stands in front of the vehicle on the left side. The key video showing the moments leading up the shooting, where Good is backing away from officers before she tries to pull away.Photo by KSTP reporter KaMaria BrayeGood starts to drive forward and to the right, away from the agent, when the agent fires a first shot from the vehicle’s left. The agent fires two more shots from the side as the vehicle pulls away. It’s not clear from this video whether Good’s vehicle made contact with the agent who fired the shots, but he is clearly seen walking after firing the shots. In her press conference, Noem said the agent was taken to a hospital and then released. What the fuck!”A second video shows a different angle of Good pulling away from two of the three agents. It also shows the vehicle appearing to make contact with the third agent as she swerves away. The agent is heard firing a shot around the same time. He then fires multiple shots from the side of the car when it’s no longer pointed toward him.The immediate aftermath of the fatal shooting.Photo by KSTP reporter KaMaria BrayeGood’s vehicle hits parked cars down the street after she’s shot. As The Minnesota Star Tribune noted, neither video appeared to show Good “viciously” running over an ICE agent as Trump stated. The agent also fired multiple shots at Good after the vehicle was no longer pointed at any of the three agents seen in the clips. Close
