Jan. 6 Plaque Honoring Police To Hang In SenateThe Senate on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution to hang a plaque honoring first responders who protected the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021, attack on Congress. The bipartisan effort, spearheaded by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Oreg.), came after five years of resistance by House Republicans, who ignored a law passed in the wake of the riot stipulating that a plaque be hung in honor of U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement agencies.House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-La.) office this week called the law "not implementable" because it required the plaque to list the names of every individual who responded to Jan. 6.Tillis, meanwhile, said Thursday that a digital list of thousands of names of police officers who responded to the attack will address those concerns. The plaque will now be hung in the Senate — possibly inside the chamber — until the House finds a place for it on the West Front of the Capitol, as the law stated.See All UpdatesClose
