Monday marked Marjorie Taylor Greene's final day in the United States House of Representatives after she announced she was leaving public office at the end of last year.

"I've always represented the common American man and woman as a member of the House of Representatives which is why I've always been despised in Washington, D. C. and never fit in," Greene said in a Nov. 21 statement.

Greene would have been up for reelection this year in the midterms, but she instead chose to resign effective Jan. 5. She gave her official resignation letter to Governor Brian Kemp on Jan. 3.

Greene was vocal, controversial and represented a key district in the national political landscape. What's next for Georgia's 14th congressional district?

Following the resignation of a house member, the Georgia governor has 10 days to call a special election, and it must be held no less than 30 days after the election is called. As of Tuesday, Jan. 6, a special election date has not been announced.
