American Airlines is rolling out free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members Jan. 6, and expects to have the perk available on almost all of its flights by this spring.

According to the airline, free Wi-Fi will first be available on its narrowbody planes and two-class regional jets.

The Wi-Fi program is sponsored by AT&T and provided by Intelsat and Viasat.

“Free high-speed Wi-Fi isn’t just a perk – it’s essential for today’s travelers. That’s why we’re proud to begin rolling out this new offering, sponsored by AT&T, across the majority of our fleet. Once roll out is completed every AAdvantage member can stay connected, stream and share almost anywhere their journey takes them for free," Heather Garboden, chief customer officer at American Airlines, said in a statement.

American's policy around free Wi-Fi is similar to Delta Air Lines, which was the first legacy carrier in the U.S. to offer free internet across its fleet. Both airlines require enrollment in their loyalty program to access the perk.
