The police seized about 12 suspected crude bombs from two separate locations of Kannur district of Kerala on Monday night, prompting heightened security measures in areas that have witnessed political clashes in the past.
Four high-intensity steel bombs were recovered from an abandoned plot at Thodikalam cave junction at Kannavam. The explosives were found stored inside a bucket in a deserted area.
In the other seizure, the police recovered eight suspected crude bombs, locally known as ‘ice cream bombs’ since these are made using ice cream balls, along with a machete from a school ground at Thangalpeedika in Panoor. The bombs were discovered while tar barrels were being removed as part of tarring works. The Panoor police have shifted the barrels to the police station.
District Police Chief P. Nidhinraj said that both areas had witnessed political clashes in the past.
The seized bombs have been shifted, and whether the containers had any explosive materials could be confirmed only after a detailed examination by the bomb squad, he added.
