Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Manchester United fired coach Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils announced Monday.

The Red Devils cited their sixth-place status in the Premier League in their reasoning for what they called a "reluctant" decision. Darren Fletcher was named interim coach.

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future," the Red Devils said.

Amorim assumed his role as head coach of the Red Devils in November 2024, replacing interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy. Erik ten Hag coached the Red Devils from 2022 to October 2024.
