College football's most storied game in its most idyllic setting will kick off on New Year's Day — and do so with a spot in College Football Playoff semifinals on the line.
No. 1 Indiana will take on No. 9 Alabama in the playoff quarterfinals in the Rose Bowl on Thursday, Jan. 1 at the game's eponymous stadium in Pasadena, California.

In their second season under coach Curt Cignetti, the Hoosiers are the lone remaining undefeated team at the FBS level, with a 13-0 record that was capped off by a 13-10 win against Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game. With Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza leading the way, Indiana is appearing in its first Rose Bowl since the 1967 season.
It will take on an Alabama team that snuck into the playoff with a 10-3 regular-season mark, but overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat No. 8 Oklahoma 34-24 on the road on Dec. 19 in the first round of the playoff.
