A 25-year-old youth who was accused of stabbing a woman to death and injuring her sister at Elamkulam, near Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district, in June 2021, in an apparent reprisal for rejecting his romantic advances, reportedly ran away from the Government Mental Health Centre, Kuthiravattom, on Monday night (December 29).
According to reports, Vineesh Vinod, a native of Narukara near Manjeri in Malappuram, was a remand prisoner in the Central Jail, Kannur. He had been undergoing treatment at the mental health centre for the past two weeks. The jail staff noticed his absence in the cell during their routine checking around 11 p.m. Vineesh is believed to have drilled a hole in the washroom to get out of the building.
This is the second time Vineesh has escaped from the mental health centre. He was admitted here in 2022 with mental health issues. Though Vineesh had run away from the facility then as well, the police were able to nab him. He was again admitted here earlier this month.
The police have issued an alert in railway stations and bus stations. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage outside the hospital is also being examined.
