Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) conducted its annual bomb threat mock exercise on December 29. The drill tested the airport’s preparedness in responding to security threats against high-value public infrastructure, such as the airport.
The simulated scenario involved an ‘abandoned bag’ containing mock explosives at its Integrated Cargo Terminal. The Airport Security Group of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) neutralised the perceived threat with precision, supported in real-time by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad of Karnataka State Police, Mangaluru City Police and multiple internal airport stakeholders.
Upon discovering the abandoned bag containing what was perceived as a bomb, security personnel immediately moved it to a secluded area. A personnel in a protective bomb suit then transferred the ‘bomb’ into a remote-controlled bomb disposal containment unit for neutralisation.
A detailed debrief chaired by Commandant and Chief Airport Security Officer Abhishek Yadav followed, wherein response effectiveness and areas for improvement were discussed.
