Police fatally shot a man who opened fire on officers, wounding two, during a Dec. 26 child custody exchange in suburban Charlotte, North Carolina, officials said.

Just before 11 a.m., Mint Hill police initially responded to an Edible Arrangements gift shop for the child custody exchange, according to a police statement posted to social media.

During the incident, police said the man pulled out a firearm.

The man and police exchanged gunfire, and the two officers were shot while the man was killed, police said. Both officers were transported to local hospitals and later released, according to a Dec. 27 update.

The town of Mint Hill is home to about 28,000 people and located east of Charlotte.
