Two men died after they were buried alive when a portion of a well, which was being illegally constructed in Honatty near Kil Kotagiri, caved in on them on Friday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as S. Selvan, 50, from Gundada in Kotagiri, and Sathish, 45, from Honatty.

According to the police, five men were working at the site of a resort, where they were involved in the unauthorised construction of a well.

The men were reported to be involved in the construction of a 30-foot-deep well, when at around 11.30 a.m, a portion of it caved in on Selvan and Sathish, who were working inside it. The other workers, who noticed the incident, tried to rescue the two men. While they managed to retrieve one of their colleagues, he died on the way to hospital, officials said.

The Police as well as the Fire and Rescue Services personnel managed to retrieve the body of the second person, and both the bodies were sent for postmortem.
