A Delaware state trooper died after a shooting at a Division of Motor Vehicles office near Wilmington on Tuesday, Dec. 23, state officials said, and a suspect is also deceased.
Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer confirmed in a post on X that there was "no active threat to the public at this time" in New Castle, where the office is located.
"Law enforcement acted swiftly to secure the scene, and the shooter has been confirmed deceased," Meyer said. "State and local law enforcement are on the scene and coordinating response efforts. Please avoid the area and follow guidance from authorities."
Police in a statement did not immediately identify the state trooper they said was "killed during this incident." State police are continuing to assess additional injuries.
On Tuesday afternoon at around 2:45 p.m., dozens of police and first responder vehicles crowded the area around the DMV. Video footage streaming inside the office showed police officers in tactical gear walking around.
