When it's cold outside and you're gathered with loved ones (or bundled up on your own), there's no better opportunity to turn on a movie. To honor the holiday season, the journalists from Le Monde in English wrote about some of our favorite films to watch this time of year.
Diana Liu: Elf
As an American living in Paris, I strongly relate to Will Ferrell's Buddy the Elf – an earnest, dog-loving believer in the spirit of Christmas, befuddled by a city filled with stoney-faced cynics. Elf is a humorous and heartfelt reminder to focus on the essentials during this season: extending love unconditionally to those around you, and eating excessive amounts of sugar, obviously. And I think we could all learn from Buddy's kindness, especially in big cities. Next time someone starts yelling at me on the metro, I'll turn to them, smile and wish them "Joyeux Noël."
Sinéad McCausland: The Muppet Christmas Carol
Christmas back home is usually spent with the BBC on all day; the breakfast show in the morning provides background noise as you open presents, while the king's speech lulls you to sleep after eating a regrettable amount of pigs in blankets (unless you've switched to Channel 4's alternative Christmas speech, which is a bit more lively).
