The Delhi police have arrested a bus helper accused of stealing $1,600 (nearly ₹1.43 lakh) from the purse of an Iranian woman who left it in an inter-State bus while deboarding, an officer said on Sunday.

The accused, Monish, 26, is a resident of Jahangirpuri, north Delhi. The stolen money has been recovered from his possession, the police said.

On December 15, Dr. Ali Akbar Shah, a Delhi University professor, complained to police that his Iranian guest, Fareshteh Sayanjali, who was coming to Delhi from Uttarakhand, received a call from a bus operator that she had left her purse behind.

“However, when the purse was handed back to her, she discovered that the cash kept inside was missing,” the officer said.

A case was registered at the Kashmere Gate police station. The driver and the bus conductor told the police that the purse was found by the bus helper.
