The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will urge the DMK leadership to allot 16 Assembly constituencies to Muslim candidates in the Secular Progressive Alliance in the forthcoming Assembly elections, IUML national president K.M. Kader Mohideen said here on Saturday. Of these, the party would seek five seats for itself, he added.

Speaking to media persons after a meeting of the IUML’s Tamil Nadu State Information Technology wing, Mr. Mohideen said the party would work intensively to ensure the victory of the alliance candidates.

The meeting adopted seven resolutions, including stepping up voter-awareness campaigns to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral rolls. Expressing shock over the deletion of 97,37,832 voters in Tamil Nadu following the draft rolls published as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Mr. Mohideen said while the removal of names of the deceased and duplicate entries was justified, the deletion of migrant voters was “unacceptable”.

He said the deletions raised concerns not only about voting rights but also about citizenship, and alleged that the exercise reflected the “conspiratorial politics” of the Union government. Urging cadres to focus on enrolment-related work, he pointed to the ongoing window for new voter registration, overseas voter registration and corrections, which is open till January 18.
