The Chennai Division of Southern Railway has stepped up enforcement against stone pelting on running trains, reiterating its zero-tolerance policy. This offence is punishable under the Railways Act, 1989 and poses a serious threat to passenger safety and railway property.

In coordination with the Government Railway Police (GRP), the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has enhanced surveillance, resulting in over 37 cases registered under Sections 153 (Endangering safety of persons travelling by railway by wilful act or omission) and 154 (Endangering safety of persons travelling by railway by rash or negligent act or omission) of Railways Act, 1989.

A senior officer of RPF said the Railway Board has issued a circular for effective implementation of laws immediately. The provisions stipulate imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years and also a heavy fine for damages.

The Chennai Division has implemented a series of measures such as increased patrolling in identified risky areas; raising awareness through schools, pamphlets, and community talks; installation of warning boards near vulnerable track locations; encouraging passengers and locals to report suspicious activity; educating parents and guardians to ensure children stay away from railway tracks; monitoring hotspots using CCTV or mobile surveillance wherever possible.
