Dan Elkayam, who died on Sunday, December 14, was one of the 15 people killed in the antisemitic attack in Sydney. He was one of two French citizens affected by the attack, with the other, whose identity has not been released, being injured. His family lived in Le Bourget, a northeastern Paris suburb, while he had moved to Australia for the sunshine and his love of travel. "We are four brothers and, of the four of us, he was, to me, the kindest of all," his older brother Jérémie said on French radio, describing the 27-year-old computer engineer as "an extraordinary person who enjoyed life, not materialistic at all, who understood the value of things, and who loved to travel."

"His parents, who still live in an apartment complex in Le Bourget, were well-known shopkeepers in the city who ran a furniture store," explained Jean-Baptiste Borsali, the mayor of the town, to Agence France-Presse (AFP). The news of Elkayam's death, he said, "caused a shock in the city because they are very sociable, very kind people and well known to the community."
