Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A small plane crashed in central Mexico on Monday, killing six of 10 people on board, officials said.

The plane, a private Cessna Citation III jet, departed Acapulco bound for Toluca when it crashed with eight passengers and two crew members aboard, Mexico State Civil Protection said in a statement.

According to preliminary information, six people died. The condition of the surviving occupants of the plane was unknown.

A fire that erupted following the impact has been brought under control, the civil protection agency said.
