Two teens are recovering after they were shot while trying to steal packages from a home's porch, Atlanta Police say.
At around 3:40 p.m. on Dec. 11, officers responded to shot fired calls in the Adamsville neighborhood of west Atlanta.
A 15-year-old male was found with a gunshot wound to his right foot, and a 16-year-old male was found in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his right arm, police said. Both teens were transported to Grady hospital and are in stable condition.
In a press conference a few hours after the shooting, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said officers believe the two teens were shot during a property crime. Police believe the teens were attempting to steal packages from the home, something Schierbaum said is "not uncommon" this time of year.
The practice, commonly called porch pirating, leads to billions of dollars worth of stolen goods each year, with as many as 104 million packages being taken from their delivery location. Georgia is ranked eighth nationally for most thefts by state.
