Authorities on Monday resumed their search for the gunman in the deadly attack at Brown University after announcing that a person of interest would be released from custody.

At a news conference late Sunday, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and other Rhode Island officials told reporters the investigation was going in a "different direction."

"We have not yet solved this case, but I am confident we are going to do that in the near future," Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said.

Officials declined to elaborate on why the man who was taken into custody was detained in the first place. Multiple outlets, citing officials briefed on the investigation, reported the person of interest's identity. USA TODAY is no longer naming the person, as they were neither named a suspect in the shooting nor charged.

The shooting, which left at least two students dead and nine others injured, shook the Rhode Island community at the university, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the United States.
